Carlos Fernandes, Ph.D., is an IGCAT expert (International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism) since 2016 and was responsible for the bid of Minho, European Region of Gastronomy 2026 to IGCAT. He is Associate Professor in Tourism Studies at the Polytechnic of Viana do Castelo, Portugal. He obtained his undergraduate degree at Syracuse University (USA), Master’s at Rutgers University (USA) and Ph.D. at Bournemouth University (UK). His interests include tourism innovation, tourism as a development strategy, gastronomy, heritage, cultural and creative tourism, religious tourism, diaspora tourism and tourism destination management.
He is a lecturer in the Bachelor’s in Tourism (UNWTO Tedqual certified) and the Master’s in Innovative Tourism Development. Grand Master of the Confraternity of the Gastronomes of Minho, in Northern Portugal, and Coordinator of the ATLAS Gastronomy and Tourism Research Group.
A member of the editorial board of various tourism related scientific journals, including the Journal of Gastronomy and Tourism. Researcher at the Centre for Transdisciplinary Development Studies (CETRAD) at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro and the Centre for Research, Development and Innovation in Tourism (CiTUR), Portugal. He has presented papers in more than seventy national and international conferences, been member of scientific committees for international conferences and has nearly forty publications in his area of interest.
