The short film Slovenia – The Land of Beekeeping and the Carniolan Honey Bee from Slovenia, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2021, is the winner of the Feeding the Planet category of IGCAT’s International Food Film Menu 2023.
Bees are a source of life, since they enable the survival of mankind and the continuation of life on our planet. In this video, the Beekeeping Centre of Slovenia showcases the long beekeeping tradition of Slovenia and strives to preserve the remaining bee population, with a special focus on the autochthonous Carniolan honey bee as an essential part of the Slovenian natural and cultural heritage.
Produced by Video in foto produkcija, Nejc Travnik s.p. for the Slovenian Beekeepers’ Association, Slovenia – The Land of Beekeeping and the Carniolan Honey Bee was selected by an international jury of IGCAT experts as the best short film in the Feeding the Planet category, for its focus on the protection of the planet´s biodiversity and the importance of pollinators to ensure our collective future food security.
“Let’s protect the bees, let’s protect life! There is nothing more important about preserving biodiversity and food heritage. The role of the scientific museum is well explained and seems to be a must-go cultural and nature activity in Slovenia,” affirmed jury member Virginie Brégeon.
“A pleasant storytelling that highlights the importance of safeguarding bees and especially specific local species. It looks like a very engaging experience to have in Slovenia,” stated jury member Lluís Valentí.
The international jury of IGCAT’s International Food Film Menu 2023 included: Mai Damgaard Rasmussen (Denmark), Director of the FoodFilmFestival of Aarhus and Chair of the jury; Lluís Valentí, Director of the Girona Film Festival (Spain); Irene Giannakopoulos, Founder and President of Amorgos International Film Festival (Greece); Robert Palmer (Scotland), independent consultant and former Director of Culture, Cultural and Natural Heritage at the Council of Europe; Virginie Brégeon de Saint-Quentin, expert in design, marketing and artistic direction (France); and Raúl Torres Ajiaco, Communications Manager and Digital Content Creator at IGCAT (Colombia).
An online public’s vote is open (10-17 October 2023) to select the Public’s Favourite Film, that will be announced together with 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize at the 35th Girona Film Festival (Catalonia, World Region of Gastronomy awarded 2025) on 11 November 2023.
