Before we are buried in plastic – By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish

According to Sara Kaplan, “if we keep producing (and failing to properly dispose of) plastics at predicted rates, plastics in the ocean will outweigh fish pound for pound in 2050, the nonprofit foundation said in a report last year. According to the report, worldwide use of plastic has increased 20-fold in the past 50 years, and it is expected to double again in the next 20 years. By 2050, we’ll be making more than three times as much plastic stuff as we did in 2014. Meanwhile, humans do a terrible job of making sure those products are reused or otherwise disposed of: About a third of all plastics produced escape collection systems, only to wind up floating in the sea or the stomach of some unsuspecting bird. That amounts to about 8 million metric tons a year. “  (Read more at The Washington Post)

What can we do?

According to Avaaz,  even if already cities and countries are banning them, the only sure way to a clean, plastic bottle free world. This year there are two major summits where governments could plan the phase-out of plastics.Only a tiny fraction of the bottles we throw away are recycled. The rest take up to a thousand years to decompose. Mountains of bottles are filling landfills, creating synthetic islands in our oceans, and beautiful marine creatures are now addicted to plastic because it’s all they find to eat.

The only way to stop plastics choking our home is if we stop buying bottles and bags, and start calling on governments, in massive numbers, to take them off the market. This community has the power to lead the way. Let’s not give in to fatalism. Let’s drive through a plastics free future.
