George Hatzimarkos has been Governor of the Region of South Aegean since 2014. In 2020, he became a member of the National Delegation of Greece in the European Committee of the Regions, in the Commissions of CIVEX (Commission for Citizenship, Governance, Institutional and External affairs) and NAT (Commission for Natural Resources). He was also elected President of the Solid Waste Management Authority of South Aegean, as well as President of «K2», the Development Enterprise of South Aegean Region established in 2020. In 2019, he became President of the Committee of Tourism in the Association of Greek Regions of which he has also been a member of the Board of Directors since 2014. From May 2016 to May 2017 he served as President of the CPMR (Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe).

Committed to promoting sustainable development, green energy and innovation, Region of South Aegean leads or participates in 5 projects (Smart and Sustainable Astypalea, Chalki the first Gr-eco Island, Tilos Just Go Zero, Aegean Innovation Center of Syros, The Rhodes Co-Lab. Sustainable Destination) which aim to mitigate the negative effects of climate change, while promoting sustainable development and green economy coupled to cutting-edge technologies.

During his days, South Aegean was awarded as the European Region of Gastronomy 2019.

George Hatzimarkos is an IGCAT Ambassador (International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism) since 2023.
