Mayonnaise, The Universal Sauce gets 3rd prize in the Food Film Menu 2020

The short film Mayonnaise, The Universal Sauce from Menorca, European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2022, has been awarded 3nd prize of the Food Film Menu 2020, organised by IGCAT in collaboration with the World Regions of Gastronomy Platform.

Produced by the Island Council of Menorca (Consell Insular de Menorca), this short film unveils Menorca’s gastronomic secrets and narrates the origins and recipe of mayonnaise, a globally renown sauce that was named after Menorca’s capital city, Maó.

Shortlisted by an international jury of IGCAT experts as the Best Food Film showcasing a Historical Food Route, Mayonnaise, The Universal Sauce was the third most voted short film out of 7 finalists of the Food Film Menu 2020 in a people’s vote launched on social media by IGCAT on 4-7 September 2020.

“This film tells the little known and surprising history of mayonnaise – or should I say Mahonesa? Its story is beautifully told through pictures and the twists and turns of history, where Menorca plays its crucial role” affirmed jury member Mai Damgaard Rasmussen at the first selection stage.

“The amazing story of mayonnaise, under the current perspective of who prepares it with local ingredients by following traditional processes. A great storytelling!” stated jury member Alessio Cavicchi.

The announcement of the Food Film Menu 2020 winners took place during the Opening Ceremony of Kuopio (Finland) as European Region of Gastronomy awarded 2020-2021, held on 11 September 2020 and live streamed on YouTube for the international audience.
