Majed Almuhanna
Ir. Majed Almuhanna is a renowned expert in heritage food, culinary arts, international relations and cultural preservation. With diverse academic credentials and extensive professional experience, he has made significant contributions to safeguarding Saudi Arabia’s culinary heritage.
Majed’s fascination with food science began during his studies at King Saud University in Riyadh. His undergraduate research on the antioxidant properties of local Al Samh plants kindled a curiosity that would shape his career. Driven to expand his horizons, he traveled abroad to pursue a Diploma in English Language and Culture at McGill University in Canada, immersing himself in diverse perspectives.
In 2012, Majed entered the world-renowned Wageningen University in the Netherlands, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Food Safety. Here, he explored the intersection of food regulations, consumer safety, and economic impact. His research on allergen labeling and free-range meat certifications revealed his meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of the global food industry.
Majed’s academic journey reached its pinnacle at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where he studied for two years his Heritage Food Tourism Management. His groundbreaking research focused on the safety and authenticity of Makkah’s heritage food producers, a testament to his commitment to preserving Saudi Arabia’s culinary identity.
Majed’s expertise earned him a pivotal role as the Head of Research and Culinary Arts Preservation at the Culinary Arts Commission, Saudi Arabian Ministry of Culture. From this position, he led transformative projects, including the creation of the International FoodAtlas under UNESCO and the registration of 120 endangered food items in the Slow FoodArk of Taste. He also played a key role in defining Saudi Arabia’s national dish 13 regional dishes, solidifying the nation’s culinary heritage for future generations.
Additionally, he was the Official Spokesman for the Culinary Arts Commission, Majed became the face of Saudi food culture, sharing its beauty on global platforms. From UNESCO events in Paris to International platforms such as UN Tourism, FAO, IGCAT, Slow Food and national television talk shows, he brought Saudi Arabia’s rich culinary traditions to the world stage.
Majed’s talents extended beyond preservation. As an advisor with Bain & Company, he contributed to strategic initiatives like the Culinary Arts Commission Strategy Plan, aligning cultural preservation with economic development. His academic roles at King Saud University as the head of the student activity unit in the college of tourism and antiquities further showcased his dedication to nurturing the next generation of cultural ambassadors. Through his work, Majed has become a guardian of Saudi Arabia’s culinary soul. Whether registering Aseer as a World Gastronomy Region 2024 or codifying the nation’s culinary traditions, his efforts ensure that the flavours, stories, and heritage of Saudi cuisine will endure for generations to come. In addition to his role in registering Buraydah as a creative city of gastronomy in UNESCO, the second city in the Arab world.
