Kvarner receives European Region of Gastronomy 2026 Award

Kvarner receives European Region of Gastronomy 2026 Award

The International Institute for Gastronomy, Culture, Art, and Tourism (IGCAT) has awarded Kvarner the prestigious title of European Region of Gastronomy 2026, recognizing the region’s exceptional commitment to local gastronomy, cultural heritage, and sustainable tourism. This award highlights the values that IGCAT upholds: fostering community collaboration, promoting cultural and culinary diversity, and encouraging innovation for a sustainable future.

This accolade comes as Kvarner celebrates 30 years of dedication to developing itself as one of Croatia’s most captivating and forward-thinking tourist destinations. Dr. Irena Peršić Živadinov, Director of the Kvarner Tourist Board, stated, “This recognition is not just a celebration of our past achievements but a powerful motivation to continue shaping a sustainable and innovative future.”

IGCAT’s award emphasizes the principles of promoting local identity, culinary heritage, and the role of food in uniting communities. It acknowledges the region’s efforts to build year-round tourism through collaboration and strategic vision. Jaume Gomila, IGCAT Board Member, highlighted Kvarner’s unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and gastronomic innovation, describing it as a model for other regions in Europe.

The ceremony celebrated Kvarner’s culinary excellence with a tasting journey showcasing the diversity of the region’s eight sub-regions. Over 20 chefs and 10 sommeliers presented dishes and wines made from native grape varieties, reflecting IGCAT’s core belief in preserving local biodiversity and showcasing authentic flavors.

Dr. Peršić Živadinov remarked, “This award unlocks exciting opportunities for Kvarner, enhancing its global profile and offering visitors immersive, gastronomy-centered experiences that honor our cultural and natural resources.”

Recognizing that gastronomy is a key driver of sustainable development, IGCAT and the European Region of Gastronomy Award underscore the importance of collaboration. National and local stakeholders, including the Croatian National Tourist Board and the Ministry of Tourism and Sport, joined in celebrating this milestone. Kristjan Staničić, Director of the Croatian National Tourist Board, noted that this achievement reflects the shared efforts of all contributors to Kvarner’s success.

As Kvarner takes its place among the European Regions of Gastronomy, it stands as a testament to the power of innovation, cooperation, and respect for local heritage—values that are at the heart of IGCAT’s mission. This award not only highlights Kvarner’s past and present successes but also lays the foundation for a vibrant, sustainable future.
