The plan, which was passed by Galway city councillors last month, focuses on the pivotal role culture has played in Galway’s past and how it will feature prominently in the years ahead to the European Capital of Culture designation for 2020. In his foreword in the plan, Chief Executive of Galway City Council, Brendan McGrath says, “There are major challenges and opportunities ahead for the city. These challenges will be addressed and the opportunities maximised through genuine public consultation and multi-agency collaborations.”
The plan places a focus on developing more innovative approaches that deliver more creative uses of public spaces and will develop a managed Vacant Spaces Scheme in conjunction with the Historic Assets Register and Local Authority lists.
With the city and county’s success in winning the European Capital of Culture 2020 along with the UNESCO City of Film designation, European Region of Gastronomy 2018, the Urbanism Great Town award, the Purple Flag award, the FDI Micro-City of the Year award and the European Green Leaf Award 2017 as Europe’s most environmentally sustainable small city, “It is an exciting time for Galway,” added Mr McGrath.
