Minho and Catalunya launched their programs for 2016 when they will hold the title European Region of Gastronomy, at an event held for the SEDEC Commission of the Committee of the Regions in Brussels. Yoomi Renström, Chair of the SEDEC Committee (The Commission for Social Policy, Education, Employment, Research and Culture ) opened the event and commented on how intriguing she found the award since knowing that it is about supporting food cultures and diversity. Dr. Diane Dodd, Executive Director of IGCAT, explained to SEDEC members that the European Region of Gastronomy Platform and Award are an opportunity for regions to gain visibility internationally and, because the award is given by an external international jury it also gives the region credibility. She pointed out that both Minho and Catalonia are using the title in different ways to address challenges in their regions although both regions have found that it provides the opportunity to bring together fragmented initiatives in the region and attract investment in new ideas and projects that support food creativity, education or entrepreneurship. Following the introductions Catalonia and Minho had the opportunity to invite the SEDEC regions to learn about their programmes and taste some products from the region.
