New cookbook celebrates food and culture of Aleppo

Aleppo, once one of the most renowned cities in Syria, has long been noted for its exquisite food. Its cuisine has been awarded a Grand Prix of Gastronomic Culture from the International Academy for Gastronomy, writes Lebanon-based chef Marlene Matar in The Aleppo Cookbook: Celebrating the Legendary Cuisine of Syria, “the only city besides Paris to receive such a distinction.”

“Since 2015, the end of March, we welcomed our first [refugees from Syria],” said Corine Dehabey, director of the Toledo office of US Together. There are now about 40 families, she said, and about 134 people in all, with five or six new families arriving each month after completing an immigration process that can take up to three years.
