According to\u00a0WFP<\/a>\u2019s report,\u00a0State of School Feeding Worldwide<\/a>, 370 million children in 199 countries and territories were suddenly deprived of school meals, when schools closed due to the pandemic. That meal was for many their only nutritious food of the day.<\/p>\n David Beasley, WFP Executive Director,\u00a0highlighted\u00a0the importance of what’s been lost: \u201cThat one meal a day is often the reason hungry children go to school in the first place. It\u2019s also a powerful incentive to make sure they\u2019ll come back after lockdown ends.<\/p>\n \u201cWe need to get these programmes running again \u2013 even better than before \u2013 to stop COVID destroying the futures of millions of the world\u2019s most vulnerable children.\u201d<\/p>\n To that\u00a0end, WFP will build a coalition to support governments scale up their school meals programmes, working with development agencies, donors, the private sector and civil society organizations, according to the agency.<\/p>\n It has also launched a ten-year\u00a0School Feeding Strategy<\/a>\u00a0to strengthen its global\u00a0strategic role in school health and nutrition.
