The first annual European Region of Gastronomy award candidates have been shortlisted. The regions of Catalonia (Spain) and Minho (Portugal)\u00a0presented successful written proposals to IGCAT on\u00a0Monday 19 January 2015. The shortlisted regions will have the opportunity to present their bid to a selected jury panel and public audience on\u00a0Friday 6 February 2015 at 11:00am, at the Palacete Villa Moraes in Ponte de Lima, in the Portuguese region of Minho.<\/p>\n

Following the presentation, the shortlisted regions will receive recommendations from\u00a0an international\u00a0jury panel headed\u00a0by deputy-chairman, Prof. Greg Richards. The list of international\u00a0jury members include\u00a0Ilie Rotariu from the\u00a0University \u2018Lucian Blaga\u2019 of Sibiu (Romania),\u00a0Roberta Garibaldi from the\u00a0University of Bergamo (Italy),\u00a0Anna Blaua from the\u00a0Riga Tourism Development Bureau (Latvia),\u00a0Claire Robert from the\u00a0Conservatoire International des Cuisines M\u00e9diterran\u00e9ennes (France),\u00a0Anja van Hout from\u00a0Agrifood Capital (the Netherlands),\u00a0Carmel Cassar from the University of Malta (Malta) and\u00a0Jesper H. B. Christensen from\u00a0City of Aarhus (Denmark).<\/p>\n

The regulations for the award have been developed as bottom-up initiative with nine European regions working together with the operative body for the award \u2013 the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT), over the past year and a half to design the concept. Members from the founding regions will also meet in Minho on\u00a04-5 February 2015\u00a0to further discussion on the development of the platform.<\/p>\n

The European Region of Gastronomy award will be officially launched in May 2015, with the selection and announcement of the final winning regions by the Chairman of the Jury, Mr. Anton Rambouts.<\/p>\n

\u2018We are hugely excited by the interest in the European Region of Gastronomy award and by the quality of the candidacies\u2019, said Prof. Greg Richards, \u2018this confirms the demand for such an initiative within Europe\u2019, he added.<\/p>\n

The award seeks to link food, tourism, culture, identity, health and sustainability to support regional development, whether at an economic, social, environmental or cultural level. It will be bestowed each year to a European region which combines innovation and sustainability to local culinary and cultural identity.
