{"id":19825,"date":"2019-12-13T18:13:48","date_gmt":"2019-12-13T17:13:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/igcat.org\/?p=19825"},"modified":"2021-01-05T16:37:49","modified_gmt":"2021-01-05T15:37:49","slug":"new-cooking-competition-pacific-island-food-revolution-serves-up-pasifika-cuisine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/igcat.org\/es\/new-cooking-competition-pacific-island-food-revolution-serves-up-pasifika-cuisine\/","title":{"rendered":"New cooking competition Pacific Island Food Revolution serves up Pasifika cuisine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Renowned Kiwi-born chef Robert Oliver has cooked up what he hopes will be a life-saving recipe for Pacific Islanders.<\/p>\n<p>He is putting his experience on\u00a0<em>My Kitchen Rules New Zealand<\/em>\u00a0to good use with\u00a0<em>Pacific Island Food Revolutio<\/em>n (<em>PIFR<\/em>), a cooking show aimed at encouraging Pacific Islanders to return to eating traditional foods.<\/p>\n<p>The show is part of an initiative funded by the New Zealand and Australian governments amid concern that the introduction of processed foods is killing people in &#8216;Pacific Island paradises&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abIn Pacifica there&#8217;s a deluge of marketing by the big processed-food companies and it&#8217;s powerful stuff,\u00bb Oliver says.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abWhite rice has replaced a lot of the traditional carbohydrate which was far healthier and sugary drinks are everywhere and super cheap.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abThere&#8217;s no shortage of food. There&#8217;s just a shortage of food with the right nutrition and a lot of these \u2013 we wouldn&#8217;t even call them food \u2013 have replaced the traditional diet and thereby we have\u00a073 per cent of Pacific people dying of non-communicable\u00a0diseases (heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure) which are diseases related to the way we eat and live.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p><em>Pacific Island Food Revolution<\/em>\u00a0follows 24 cooks from Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu and Samoa as they\u00a0turn traditional island foods into\u00a0prize-winning dishes. Unlike many other TV shows, there is no big prize for the winners \u2013 and also none of the nastiness and tantrums viewers have come to expect.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pacific Island Food Revolution<\/em>\u00a0is a hit in the Islands where it screened this year and the contestants have become famous, with their newfound star power being used to further promote healthy food initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abIn Vanuatu and PNG, there seems to be a poor understanding that diet is what is making people sick and they&#8217;re attributing it to black magic rather than, &#8216;I should stop eating all this white rice&#8217;,\u00bb\u00a0he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abThis may be a television show but, actually,\u00a0we hope it&#8217;s also a behaviour-change project in terms of what people eat.
