Menorca encourages local consumption

Despite the huge challenges brought about by the COVID-19 global outbreak, Menorca is strengthening its support to local producers by encouraging the island’s community to opt for local, fresh, seasonal and sustainable products.

On 8 January 2020, IGCAT awarded Menorca the European Region of Gastronomy 2022 title, based on the region’s efforts to support local food and cultural diversity outlined in the Menorca – Timeless Flavour bid book, as well as its leading role in boosting sustainability.

Far from changing its main focus during the current crisis, the Government of Menorca recently launched a social media campaign to call for an increased consumption of local products among its citizens in order to sustain the local economy, as well as promote people’s and the planet’s health.

While the population is forced to stay at home in order to preserve public health, several producers and distributors involved in the Made in Menorca brand are exploring new ways to facilitate the purchase of local food, including home delivery.

Besides stimulating a strong sense of community and instilling pride in the islanders in their rich food culture, Menorca’s campaign advocates for a general re-thinking of the globalised system we live in and highlights the benefits of favouring more local production and consumption practices.
