Building on the success of Menorca European Region of Gastronomy 2022, a cross-island consortium of 21 stakeholders is paving the way for a future rooted in food culture, sustainability, and social inclusion.

The Balearic Islands have officially joined IGCAT’s World Region of Gastronomy Platform as a candidate for the European Region of Gastronomy 2030 title, marking a significant step toward consolidating gastronomy as a driver of cultural, environmental, and social progress.

The official signing ceremony, held in Mallorca, brought together Dr. Diane Dodd, President of IGCAT; Jaume Bauzà, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sports; Joan Simonet, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment; the coordinating team at the Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency (AETIB); and representatives of the 21 stakeholders, along with adherents supporting the initiative.

The signing marks the beginning of a shared journey to place food culture at the heart of a more balanced, regenerative and inclusive future for the islands. Building on Menorca’s experience, the candidacy will bring together the distinctive food cultures of Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera, while respecting the particular character, knowledge and traditions of each island.

At the centre of this ambition are the people who sustain the islands’ food cultures every day: farmers, fishers, artisans, producers, chefs, educators and local communities. The candidacy provides an opportunity to develop a common framework, in which gastronomy can contribute to the wellbeing of residents and can offer visitors a deeper understanding of the islands and the people behind their food. It is an invitation to celebrate local knowledge, encourage collaboration across sectors and ensure that the value created through gastronomy remains closely connected to the territory.

Social inclusion was also placed at the heart of the programme. The cocktail reception following the signing was provided by Màter, an organisation supporting people with disabilities and their families. Through its school, hotel, restaurant and farm, Màter promotes autonomy, participation and quality of life, offering a powerful example of how food and hospitality can contribute to a more inclusive society.

As a candidate region, the Balearic Islands will now work with IGCAT and fellow Regions of Gastronomy to develop a long-term programme for 2030. Building on Menorca’s legacy, the aim is to make gastronomy a lasting source of cultural pride, environmental responsibility, social cohesion and opportunity for all four islands.
